From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Family Business: The Story Behind J&V Landscaping and Housekeeping

What started as a simple idea between a young couple has now grown into a full-blown family business, 15 years strong and still growing. Back in the day, Jose was picking up mowing jobs wherever he could while his wife, Maria Violeta, worked in a local factory. Life changed when they found out Maria was pregnant. That moment sparked a new idea: “Why don’t we start cleaning houses, too?” Violeta suggested. With nothing more than determination and a few word-of-mouth referrals, they started knocking on doors and offering their services. Jobs came in little by little mowing lawns, cleaning kitchens and bathrooms whatever people needed. Then one day, everything shifted. Jose was mowing on the west side of Sioux City when a homeowner asked him if he knew anyone who did landscaping. “They told me I should do it,” Jose recalls. “At first, I turned it down because I didn’t think I had the knowledge. But they took a chance on me, and that job turned out great. The client said, ‘There you go. You’re a landscaper now!’ and from there, it just grew.”

A Business (and Family) Begins to Bloom

As more people began to notice their great work, their client list started to grow, not from ads or flashy marketing, but through reputation, trust, and consistency. While Jose handled the yards, Maria focused on what she did best, making homes sparkle. “That’s her specialty,” says their daughter Ruby. “She really takes pride in making sure the client is always happy with the job.” As J&V Landscaping and Housekeeping began to grow, so did the family’s involvement. Jose started bringing Ruby, his son Jose, and his other children to job sites. They’d help with raking, handing out flyers, mowing, or pitching in on spring cleanups. Eventually, Ruby moved into the office as the manager and she’s been running things ever since.

A Family-Run Operation with Heart

Today, the business is divided into two powerhouse teams.

“One of our biggest requests is for walls,” says Ruby. “Sometimes clients need something fixed that wasn’t done right the first time, or they’re ready to completely transform their outdoor space. It always depends on what the client wants.”

Housekeeping Team:

Maria leads a trusted team of four who handle:

General and deep cleaning
Post-construction cleanup
Commercial & residential services
With flexible options: weekly, biweekly, or monthly.

“Our ladies never split up job sites,” says Ruby. “Maria handles the tougher areas like kitchens and bathrooms, while the rest of the team covers the rest. We don’t cut corners — we follow a process, keep the client informed, and stick to what we promise.”

Built on Integrity, Fueled by Family

From initial walkthroughs to final checklists, J&V’s approach is all about clarity, reliability, and pride in their work. “We don’t stray from our process,” Ruby explains. “Our goal is to keep the client in the loop from start to finish. We use sign-off sheets, we communicate clearly, and we make sure the client is always satisfied.” Even the back-end of the business is handled by family Jose’s brother, Guillermo, who helps manage the accounting. And when it gets tough? Jose says it’s Maria who keeps him going. “There are days when I might want to give up, but Maria inspires me. She tells me I can do it. She’s the backbone of all of this,” he shares. “Being part of a family business allows you to lean on each other. We have each other’s backs, and we are just so grateful to the community for having us.”
